I bought a NVidia GE Force 8400 GS card to upgrade my Compaq Presario, for game playing. Now that I'm home attempting to install it I find out that it doesn't fit into my PCI slot. Which one do I need?|||I'm not sure which exact card you bought, but PCI and PCI-Express are two different card types.
If your computer only has PCI slots, then a PCI-Express card won't physically fit. Most computers have a dedicated video slot (either PCI-Express or AGP) in addition to PCI slots.
In general, older PCI isn't good enough to play modern games (and the 8400GS is terrible in any format- take a look at it's performance in the test results below).

The best PCI card you can buy is a 9500GT, which is $20 more expensive but slower than the PCI-Express version (or the Radeon 4650 which is slightly better).

Which model Presario do you have? From that we could determine what slots it has, and therefore what type of video card would fit.|||Generally there are three types of graphic cards, PCI, AGP, and PCI-e. When you purchase one you must get the correct type. The 8400 card may be available in PCI, to find out go to Nvidia web site.|||well if its a pci card it should fit. take a close look with a flashlight, make sure nothing is blocking it. you may need to move another card to another slot to make room if it is a tight fit. just dont force it.

Can you put both pci-e and pci video cards on a computer and both of them work?
i have a pci express video card installed in my computer, could i buy a video card that goes into the pci slot and have both of them work at the same time?|||I don't know if there is a technical limitation with PCIe, but from what I know you can have several video cards in the computer to have dual screen or more in your configuration.
I don't know why the other person just said "no" with no explanation.
Cheers!|||nope.

Is Pci express 2.0 video card compatible with a pci express x16 slot?
I plan to buy a PCI EXPRESS 2.0 video card and I don`t know if will be compatible with pci express x16 slot. My motherboard:P5LD2-X/1333.|||Will it fit into the slot and function? yes. Will you get all that the card has to give? Not likely.
The reason being that while the interface is the same, most motherboards do not yet support the 2.0 technology.
Think of it like the difference between usb 1.1 and 2,0. If you plug a usb 2,0 device into a 1.1 slot it will function, but not at 2,0 speeds.
the difference is that the pcie problem could theoretically be fixed with software, such as new firmware, or bios updates, possibly even as simple as driver updates.
Maybe the mobo manufacturers will get on this and we can all soon see just what it will take to get our mobos up to speed.
hope that helps.|||It should be just fine. The newer mobo's are backwards compatible. The only thing is that you might not get the full advantages of the 2.0 card.

Which video card should i buy. I have a pci express slot?
My current video card running out of my agp slot has started artificacting, many cards are not even that good on the agp slot anymore. I need to know the most affordable high quality card that i can get for a pci express slot, i am thinking nvidia? Thanks|||Are you sure you have a PCIExpress slot?
There are only a very small handful of motherboards out there that has both AGP and PCIExpress slots using VIA chipsets.
Hopefully you are not confusing non-express PCI classic slots with PCIExpress-- AGP motherboards usually have non-express PCI slots, and those will NOT work with PCIExpress cards.
It would be a shame for you to buy a nice expensive PCIExpress card only to find that you can't use it in your machine.|||you are correct use NVIDIA GeForce 6400 or better
also, Radeon card work good but are a little more pricey|||NVidia 6 series i ahve a GTX 285 and this thing is pimp it was about 300 dollars|||hi my video card went out so i had to get a new i would recommend this video card http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.d… . it is a great normal video card that fits in the PCI Express slot and it not that pricey

How do I fix the error that is making my PCI Express slot not run my video card properly?
When its connected and ran through my computer there are fine lines across the screen. It also runs at 4 or 8 bit pixels, it won't run at 32 bit 1024 x 768. For the device conflicts it says something about input output, Intel 9465, and memory range with a bunch of different numbers. I can run PCI video cards just fine, so I am confused about this.|||okay try that video card in another computer the pci-e one and see if there is a problem
also the bios need to sometimes have the buffer set to nothing or disabled when using a pci -e card because the pci -e card will take from your normal memory that the rest of your computer uses.
save and exit

How do I know if my video card is junk or if my PCI-E slot is burnt up?
I have an EVGA 7600GT video card that WAS working on my Dell Dimension 4700. My monitor burnt out at one point, and the computer sat there in a closed computer cabinet, acting as my server, for my home network for a couple months. I finally replaced the monitor, but found the computer was not recognizing the video card upon restarting. Did my PCI-E slot burn up or did my video card burn up?|||Trial and error.
Find another computer to put it in to test or find another video card to put in your computer.
If you don't have either of these I would suggest having a computer store test it out, or purchase a video card online with the intention of returning it if you were wrong and buying a motherboard instead.|||easiest way to check is plug the video card into another pci-e slot or another computer and if it work and recognized then the slot went bad if not then the card went bad.

If my integrated video card slot is damaged, how can I run BIOS to install a new PCI Graphics Card?
My mom damaged (destroyed) the integrated video slot on the back of her Dell Dimension 2400. There is no working output now to any monitors. I am going to buy a cheap PCI Graphics card to install in one of the slots, but once the hardware is installed how can I run BIOS on the computer to reset the video to the new PCI card? Without a currently working video output, it is impossible for me to make any configuration changes. Help!|||Usually BIOS calls by <F2> or <DEL> buttons. But I wonder why your Dell didn't recognize the PCI (or may be AGP?) video. Is it possible to find analog and copy process with that computer? It is difficult process to make changes without monitor. Possible but difficult. May be when you drop your BIOS setting to default by special connector on motherboard or by battery removing priority will set to PCI video?|||OK, to install a new graphic card you don't have to hit BIOS for anything. Most graphics cards are plug and play, just take the side panel out, make sure you wear an anti-static wristband, install the new PCi Graphic card in the PC, connect the VGA cable and that's it. If the graphic card came with a software, then you can install it, just in case the PC prompt you for "New Hardware Found".
Good luck.|||Hit F2 on boot to hit the Bios menu
