I'm building multi monitor systems for Windows XP and Windows Vista. I'm wondering if a PCI-Express video card will work in a standard PCI slot. I am aware that PCI-X RAID controllers will work in normal PCI slots. When answering please cite reliable internet source. Specific card I would like to work in PCI slot is a EVGA Geforce 7600GTS .|||It is impossible to fit a PCI-E card into a PCI slot. It's like trying to fit a square peg in a round hole. They are physically completely different. Even if you could the technology is completely different as well.
PCI-X and PCI-E are also completely different. PCI-X is a faster version of PCI, but both are physically identical. This is why a PCI-X RAID controllers will work in standard PCI slots...because they fit. Check out the chart below (first link).
The only solution to your problem would be to purchase a new motherboard. It is very possible that you will be able to find a similar one to the one that you already have (i.e. one that has the same CPU socket and RAM bus speed), but with one or two PCI-E slots. That way you won't have to replace everything on your PC.
I recommend the ASUS M2N-SLI Deluxe. It's uses AM2 socket AMD processors, and it has two PCI-E slots for easy SLI capability. It also uses SUPER fast 800 MHz RAM. It's a GREAT board!
I hope this helps. If it does, please select my answer as best answer...I'm trying to collect points. Thanks!|||no i dont think the bus(the fitting) is the same size|||No.|||No it won't.|||No, a PCI-E 16x card will not fit, not work in a PCI slot. You will probably have to find a new motherboard that supports PCI-E 16x.
