I bought a NVidia GE Force 8400 GS card to upgrade my Compaq Presario, for game playing. Now that I'm home attempting to install it I find out that it doesn't fit into my PCI slot. Which one do I need?|||I'm not sure which exact card you bought, but PCI and PCI-Express are two different card types.
If your computer only has PCI slots, then a PCI-Express card won't physically fit. Most computers have a dedicated video slot (either PCI-Express or AGP) in addition to PCI slots.
In general, older PCI isn't good enough to play modern games (and the 8400GS is terrible in any format- take a look at it's performance in the test results below).

The best PCI card you can buy is a 9500GT, which is $20 more expensive but slower than the PCI-Express version (or the Radeon 4650 which is slightly better).

Which model Presario do you have? From that we could determine what slots it has, and therefore what type of video card would fit.|||Generally there are three types of graphic cards, PCI, AGP, and PCI-e. When you purchase one you must get the correct type. The 8400 card may be available in PCI, to find out go to Nvidia web site.|||well if its a pci card it should fit. take a close look with a flashlight, make sure nothing is blocking it. you may need to move another card to another slot to make room if it is a tight fit. just dont force it.

Can you put both pci-e and pci video cards on a computer and both of them work?
i have a pci express video card installed in my computer, could i buy a video card that goes into the pci slot and have both of them work at the same time?|||I don't know if there is a technical limitation with PCIe, but from what I know you can have several video cards in the computer to have dual screen or more in your configuration.

When its connected and ran through my computer there are fine lines across the screen. It also runs at 4 or 8 bit pixels, it won't run at 32 bit 1024 x 768. How do I know if my video card is junk or if my PCI-E slot is burnt up?
I have an EVGA 7600GT video card that WAS working on my Dell Dimension 4700. My monitor burnt out at one point, and the computer sat there in a closed computer cabinet, acting as my server, for my home network for a couple months. If my integrated video card slot is damaged, how can I run BIOS to install a new PCI Graphics Card?
My mom damaged (destroyed) the integrated video slot on the back of her Dell Dimension 2400. There is no working output now to any monitors. I am going to buy a cheap PCI Graphics card to install in one of the slots, but once the hardware is installed how can I run BIOS on the computer to reset the video to the new PCI card? What is the difference between a PCI slot and a PCI express slot? Can I use a PCIe video card with a PCI slot

Could mu computer's PCI-E slot be causing video cards to fry?
So in the pass 2 months I've had 2 cards. 8800GT nvidia and ATI radeon 5670HD DDR5 2.5gig. My 8800GT ran like 2 times and it does a green tear in the screen on startup and never worked again , So i saved up and got this new 5670 ATI radeon last night. It worked good , But it did the SAME EXACT green tear in the SAME place on the screen on startup and now it's not working. Could my PCI-E slot be causing this? Is there an adapter that will hook up a pci express video card to a pci slot?

It is a universal type card.|||Well, they are probably PCI-E cards and PCI-E comes in different speeds and even different power ratings, so they put the slots in it to prevent you from accidentally putting it into a slot that will damage the card. You still need to be careful, however, because not all PCI-E slots follow the convention and you might be able to put a card into a slot that will damage it, but that's mostly the case with older motherboards (more than a couple years old mostly).

It is a universal type card.|||Well, they are probably PCI-E cards and PCI-E comes in different speeds and even different power ratings, so they put the slots in it to prevent you from accidentally putting it into a slot that will damage the card. You still need to be careful, however, because not all PCI-E slots follow the convention and you might be able to put a card into a slot that will damage it, but that's mostly the case with older motherboards (more than a couple years old mostly).

Is a PCI Express 2.0 video card compatible with a PCI Express x16 slot?

It's more similar to the old PCMCIA cards than something you'd find in a desktop. Unfortunately you did not mention the brand of the video card that you intend to buy, since it is easier to check the manufacturer's website to find it out, based on the model.
However, as a golden rule, PCI slot video cards have only 1 notch. AGP slot video cards have more than 1 notch (at least 2, 3 for AGP2).

Unfortunately you did not mention the brand of the video card that you intend to buy, since it is easier to check the manufacturer's website to find it out, based on the model.
However, as a golden rule, PCI slot video cards have only 1 notch. AGP slot video cards have more than 1 notch (at least 2, 3 for AGP2).

I am aware that PCI-X RAID controllers will work in normal PCI slots. When answering please cite reliable internet source. Specific card I would like to work in PCI slot is a EVGA Geforce 7600GTS .|||It is impossible to fit a PCI-E card into a PCI slot. It's like trying to fit a square peg in a round hole. They are physically completely different. Even if you could the technology is completely different as well.

im about to buy a new video card but it requires a PCI-e slot. now i do not know how to see if i have one . Please give me instructions how to see if i do or not!|||open the back of the computer and look at all the white sockets running along the back of the pc on the motherboard next to wher the bits come out the back for monitor etc. if you have one it will be the smallest one usualy about 3" long|||device manager,

Can I put a video capture card into any PCI slot in my computer?
I just bought a tv tuner Pci Card Phillips 7130 to make machinimas using halo3 and I cant seem to fit the card into the only open slot and i was wondering does the audio, video, and cable plug in slots need to be showing?|||make sure your trying to put it in a PCI slot and not a PCI-express slot, thats all i can think of, sorry =/|||Sounds like you got the wrong card or the wrong slot for the card.

Are Video cards different from the graphic card usually found in the PCI slot?
The one I'm talking about is the brown slot in the mother board...I was told that it is for the video card, but when I opened our CPU, I found out that we have non inserted in the slot...And I want to know because our monitor has a problem..It shows white stripes at the top of the screen but shows full screen normally when video driver is not yet installed...|||that brown slot is for a AGP graphics card since am guess your using a onboard graphics card, you would probably need to buy the graphics card from ebay since most shops will no longer sell them|||Well generally speaking a video card mayor may not solve your problem. Though there is good news. Getting ANY! video card will incrase your performance.Simply put your RAM in your computer will show less then what is actually installed (ATM) meaning it is taking ram and dedicating it to your video graphics. Now if it is AGP those cards tend to be a bit more pricey. Also you need to know if it is 8X or 4X agp. AGP has been replced by PCIE...and now PCIE2.0 is leading the way. I recommend finding our for sure if it is AGP or not. if it is Newegg would be my recommendation to get a cheap card. about $75 bucks should do.

Why would my computer use the PCI slot when it has a onboard intergrated video card?
Um I have a Dell inspiron 531 that has an intergrated geforce 6150se nforce 430 which is the onboard card right? but BIOS is saying that the default is something coming from the PCI slot...wut?|||Yes sometimes the bios shows the graphics as PCI but if you are plugged into the "on board" and there is nothing in the PCIe or PCI slot your using the ON board graphics. You can always change the bios to On board...then if you get a Video "card" and plug it into the PCIe slot it should automatically switch to the PCIe slot...with older boards you had to manually switch the bios to the PCIe bus. In some boards if you take out the video card from the PCIe slot it doesn't automatically switch back to the on board, you have to do it in the bios.|||>Default should be the integrated video, otherwise it should be PCIe.
So if you are using the built in (integrated) video, it is ONBOARD
If you have a PCIe x 16 video card it should be PCI-E
Then, some motherboards allow the OLD FASHIONED PCI video type card - almonst nobody makes them, but they are still around (I know a place that still sells them) - This should be the PCI setting.
You see there was a time before PCIe, and before it, AGP - that was back in the good old days about 15 years ago.|||Are you saying that your computer's BIOS states that it is detecting something in a PCI slot, or just that it has the PCI slot set as the default? Best single slot PCI express video cards?
I understand that for a full upgrade, I'll need a whole new system. However, I can't afford that at this time. I do think that I can manage a few hundred dollars for a new card and power supply.
I know that there are multiple types of video cards on the market, and I have a single PCI express slot and am looking to update my video card. (Stupid integrated video cards.) What are the best video cards out there which only utilize a single slot as my board only has one available for use.
Also, what is the suggested power supply rating as I'll probably also need to update my power supply to get the new card to work. My current power supply is only rated at 300 watts.|||well you'll have to do the research yourself but here is a mini guide

all single cards only plug into one actual slot. some big cards will be physically wider though. there width makes them take up the space of 2 addin cards but they only plug into one slot on your mother board.
if you need a true single slot card that only occupies the space of one slot IE no big fans or cooling housing...etc...
I think that the geforce 9800 GT is your best bet...I cant think of a card that is faster and only occupies one space...
